In my experience, a beautiful aspect of recording with Gabrielle Roth and the Mirrors was that the music originated in the dance. Robert would take notes on the grooves that were improvised when we accompanied Gabrielle as she danced, weaving her spell in workshops on two continents. We’d get together back in N.Y.C. and he’d say- for example- G, remember that rhythm we played for Flowing in Montreal? We’d remember, work it up, then go to the studio and play the groove with Gabrielle dancing, going into the infinite moment where the dance and the music are one. This was our method for creating the rhythm grooves that were at the heart of the compositions that would evolve during the recording process. The Mirrors reflected Gabrielle.

Gordy has toured and recorded with Babatunde Olatunji and the Drums of Passion and with music legends Al Schackman and Bruce Langhorne. His percussion appears in such movies as Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It, and Eddie Murphy’s Coming to America.
